Each fish farm can create and hold over 1 million salmon, which
seems to be good news since there are so many variables that threaten them in the wild. What most people probably don't know is that these farmed salmon are fed through slots that are often covered with feces. This promotes rampant growth of bacteria, viruses and parasites, all of which grow, and are spread when farmed fish are released into the ocean. These parasites and bacteria are then free to latch onto the scales of other fish. Outbreaks can and have occurred causing scientists to spend millions of dollars researching what the cause is and how to get rid of it.
